Gum disease is even more common than tooth decay, with nearly 90% of adults having at least some phase of the disease (which starts out as gingivitis.) Unfortunately, the longer it goes untreated, the more likely a periodontics case is to take your smile away for good.
Watch for symptoms such as:
- Swollen or tender gums that bleed easily
- Bad breath / halitosis
- Receding gumlines
- “Long” teeth
- Food getting stuck between your teeth
- Tooth mobility
During your checkup, our dentist or hygienist will carefully measure the attachment levels of your gums to see if there are any deep “pockets” underneath them. A pocket indicates an area where bacteria has crept underneath and caused your body to begin detaching from the tooth.
Finding Affordable Scottsdale Periodontics Treatments
One of the best ways to make sure your periodontal treatment is affordable, is to see your general and family dentist. The prices will be lower than if you were to see a periodontist. Each of our Scottsdale, Scottsdale, and Scottsdale periodontics teams works closely with our patients’ insurance providers to ensure that their benefits are fully utilized.
For most people, periodontal treatment falls under therapeutic services, not preventive ones. This means that they may not be covered as much as a routine checkup and cleaning. If you don’t have insurance or want to make payments on the remaining portion of your balance, we are happy to partner with CareCredit for 0% financing up to 12 months.
Who Should I See for Scottsdale Periodontics?
When you require treatment for gum disease, you can see a general and family dentistry practice such as ours, or opt to see a periodontal specialist (periodontist.) At Dental Design Studio, our team of highly experienced dentists and hygienists are able to provide comprehensive periodontics treatments here in our Scottsdale, Scottsdale, and Scottsdale practices. This makes your treatment more efficient, more affordable, and more convenient. In fact, you can even start on your treatment the very same day.
The Health Impact of Gum Disease
Active oral infections have been proven to significantly impact a person’s susceptibility to developing infections or health conditions like:
- Premature labor
- Infertility / ED
- Heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke
…And many others
Eliminating the bacteria inside of your mouth is one of the best ways to reduce strain to your immune system, so that your body can fight off infections more effectively. Periodontal treatment is one of the best things you can do for your body and overall wellness.
Deep Cleanings and Scottsdale Periodontics Options
A series of deep cleanings is needed to help create a clean environment along the surfaces of your tooth roots, below the gums. We may numb the area as well, if the “pockets” are very deep. In these situations, a typical preventive cleaning is not appropriate. More time is necessary to thoroughly decried and scale away areas of plaque and calcified biofilm.
In some situations, we may also place small capsules of antibiotics under the gum pockets in areas of more severe infection. When this is the case, it’s important to not floss that area for at least one week, so that the medication isn’t accidentally removed.
More advanced forms of periodontal cases may occasionally need to be referred to a specialist, for crown lengthening surgery or gum grafting. At Dental Design Studio, we strive to prevent our patients from developing severe gum disease, through early intervention, screening, and other non-surgical therapies.
Untreated forms of advanced gum disease may require the need for extractions, dentures, or even dental implants once the bacterial infection is eliminated.
About Periodontal Maintenance Following Scottsdale Periodontics Treatment
Following your deep cleaning with our Scottsdale periodontics team, we will need to place you on a “periodontal maintenance” schedule. For most people, this is a therapeutic cleaning that is performed every three to four months. It is coded differently on your insurance, as it is not preventive in nature, the way a traditional dental cleaning would be. Once we’ve achieved the desired results, it is always our goal to help all of our Scottsdale periodontics patients go back to a six-month preventive recare schedule.
How do I Know if I Have Gum Disease?
During your Scottsdale periodontics exam, our dentist or hygienist will thoroughly measure six separate areas around each one of your teeth. These areas are to record the depth of the “pocket” under your gums. A pocket up to 3mm deep is considered normal or healthy. Any deeper, and it’s a sign that gum disease has started to affect the attachment tissue (which can also lead to bone loss.)
We will also need to take a set of x-rays to screen for receding bone structure. Even though we can measure attached gum tissue, it is impossible to make a clear diagnosis of a Scottsdale periodontics case without assessing the bone on a series of radiographs. You’ll be glad to know that Dental Design Studio uses low-radiation digital x-rays for all our general and family dentistry services.
Knowing When to Talk to Your Dentist
One of the very first signs of gum disease that our general and family dentistry patients notice is bleeding when they brush or floss. Bleeding isn’t normal; it’s a sign of infection. You know that you need to see a Scottsdale periodontics office if you’re also starting to develop gum recession or have problems with food packing under your gums. Don’t put it off…doing so could cost you otherwise healthy teeth. If we diagnose the condition during your first exam with us, we can start on your deep cleaning right away.
